A second day of creating art, this time not a sunny outdoor day but a sick day spent inside. See this blog post for a recap of our day.
Collaboration with "Best Buddy" friends
One of my favorite things that I participate in each year is the Best Buddies event,
"The Art of Friendship" each October. This celebration showcases artwork created jointly by local artists and Best Buddies
participants in commemoration of the thousands of friendships formed as a result of Best Buddies.
The 2006 event was held in the
gallery at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art and included delicious snacks & beverages plus silent & live auctions.
The piece that my buddy, Laura & I created (see below) was auctioned for $450! We had a wonderful day together taking photos
on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art which I used to make this digital collage. I was so happy to participate
and to help raise funds for this wonderful organization. (Click to enlarge image)
My Buddy for the 2009 "Art of Friendship" was Angie. Angie & I decided to create a piece of art on canvas. After selecting the canvas size and several acrylic paint colors we set up an outdoor art station and began our fun, messy, project! Angie's favorite color was purple so that went on the canvas first, followed by a bright blue. The more paint, the freer the strokes became until she was painting with abandon! It went through many phases and directions, from an "under the sea" painting to it's finale - sunshine, blue skies, grass, flowers and butterflies. The butterflies were cut from pre-painted canvas pieces and then adhered to the background in random places that Angie chose. The shiny, golden sun was the last thing that she added to her creation. After the piece dried I added a few final strokes of paint, outlined the butterflies, finished the edges and put a layer of clear acrylic over the surface. It was fun watching my buddy enjoy herself as the creative process ran it's course! Here is the finished product (click image to enlarge):
2011 was the last year for the "Art of Friendship" event, I will miss my creative time each fall with the buddy pairs. Here is the last piece of art created:

Collaborations with artists at Noble of Indiana
When my schedule permits I am lucky enough to be able to volunteering as a guest artist with the adult day activities at Noble of Indiana. I look forward to the mornings I am able to spend making art with the wonderful participants and
staff at Noble! Recently we spent time together working on this collaborative art piece.
For details about the process and project read my blog post.
Noble has pursued its mission of creating opportunities for people with developmental
disabilities to live meaningful lives since 1953. For more information about Noble and it's programs visit their website.
I had another opportunity to create some art with the Noble of Indiana participants! Details on the creative process for this piece can be viewed on my blog.
The 2007 event was at the Mavris Art & Event Center. My buddies were Sara and
Ceciley. We met at the local park and had a wonderful time taking pictures of the scenery (and each other!).
They selected a few favorite photos they had taken from the day, picked their favorite color and words and I created a
digital collage from their selections. As a bonus to the fun we had the artwork that my buddies & I created was chosen
to be used for the tickets, advertising and promotion of the event! Click below to see our creation!
2008's event was also held at the Marvis Arts & Events Center. My buddy for this year, a great young man named Carl, and I worked
together to create a
mixed media piece on canvas that
Carl named "Red Masterpiece". We spent several hours together creating our artwork.
The process started by doing several printmaking
images on gelatin plates. It's an interesting and unique process that used a slab of thickly mixed gelatin (yup, just like Jello!)
to print with. Carl took to the process right away and made some wonderful prints in a very short amount of time.
While they dried we started work on the canvas, covering it with a variety of printed tissue paper and a few other patterned
papers that Carl chose. Then he picked a few of the newly created prints to coordinate with what we had on the canvas and,
after tearing & cutting them into interesting shapes those were layered on to the piece. After that dried I painted the
edges and added some red paint and wire accents here & there as finishing touches. We were both pleased with how the piece
turned out. All the artwork that the buddy pairs create is auctioned off at a live auction during the event.
The winning bid on our piece raised $400 for Best Buddies! Here is an image of the finished piece(click to enlarge):
